Sunday June 16, 2013 Day 15 Total miles 383

HAPPY FATHER'S DAY!

We were wakened about 4 a.m. by fairly heavy rain only to find that we had left a hatch open in the pilot house  -- won't do that again!  The rain was gone by 8:30 leaving the fog behind.  After showers, we did a Father's Day brunch --- blueberry pancakes (the Loveless Cafe version, courtesy of my sister Linda), bacon, fruit and Bellinis.

The fog had lifted by noon giving way to partly cloudy skies and a brisk breeze.  After dishes and a couple of projects, it was time for a dinghy cruise.  No sooner had Doug and Jan deployed theirs, when the dark clouds rolled in and the rain came.  So we had a bit of a snack/lunch while we waited it out.  When the skies cleared, we launched our dinghy and away we went.  First mission, to scout out possible anchorages nearby for the return trip --- found 3 good spots depending on wind direction.

Then we reversed direction and made our way back past the marina looking for the Bayside restaurant for dinner.  Not an easy place to find!  We finally located a dark building with a green roof --- aha, we thought.  There were small boat slips behind, so we pulled in and tied up.  However, the building on the water was definitely NOT the restaurant!  Looking farther inland up the hill, there appeared to be a building nestled in the trees.  Up the path we went -- and what a lovely surprise.  Nearly hidden from view in the dense woods, we found Bayside Dining.  It was a beutiful rustic lodge setting, but the tables were set with sparkling crystal and linen tablecloths/napkins.  The dinner was as fabulous as the setting!

It tuns out, Bayside Dining is just one part of the Drummond Island Resort & Conference center.  This huge property was once owned by Tom Monaghan of Dominos Pizza fame.  It includes what was his personal Frank Lloyd Wright styled cottage and numerous other resort/rental cottages along with a golf course and bowling alley/sports bar. Who new?!

Of course just as we finished dinner and were ready to head back, the rain descended again.  It didn't last long -- and after the rain, a rainbow of course!

Time to head back to the dock for the rest of that cherry pie!
